Ceramic & Porcelain Veneers in South Delhi

Thin ceramic shells bonded to the front of a tooth to correct shade, shape, chips or gaps.

In short

A veneer is a thin porcelain shell bonded to the front of a tooth to change its shade, shape or position. Veneers correct chips, gaps, worn edges and stubborn discolouration. A small amount of enamel is usually removed first, so it is a permanent decision — we talk it through carefully.

What Are Ceramic Veneers?

A ceramic veneer is a thin, custom-made shell of porcelain bonded to the front surface of a tooth. Think of it as a new outer face for the tooth: it changes the shade, the shape, the length and, within limits, the apparent position of that tooth, while the tooth itself stays in place.

Because ceramic is translucent, light passes through a veneer much as it passes through natural enamel. That is what allows a well-made veneer to look like a tooth rather than like a covering placed over one. Veneers are usually planned as a set across the front teeth, so that shade, proportion and the line of the smile stay consistent from one side to the other.

What Veneers Can Correct

  • Discolouration that does not respond to whitening, including tetracycline staining and darkening after old trauma or root canal treatment.
  • Chipped, worn or uneven biting edges on the front teeth.
  • Teeth that are too small, too short or misshapen in relation to their neighbours.
  • Gaps and spacing between the front teeth.
  • Mild crowding or rotation, where a tooth is only slightly out of line.
  • Old, discoloured bonding that has stained at its margins.

Veneers do not move teeth. Where teeth are significantly crowded or rotated, or the bite itself is off, aligning them first with braces or aligners usually gives a healthier and more conservative result, because straight teeth need less preparation. Your dentist will tell you honestly if that is the better route for you.

Who Is a Candidate?

Veneers suit adults with healthy teeth and healthy gums who want to change how their front teeth look. Before any cosmetic work begins, decay is treated, gum inflammation is brought under control and the bite is assessed.

They are generally not the first choice where a tooth is heavily broken down or carries a very large filling, because there may not be enough sound enamel left to bond to, and a crown may hold the tooth together better. Heavy grinding also needs to be addressed, as ceramic can chip under repeated overload; a night guard is often planned as part of the treatment.

Designing the Smile Before Anything Is Prepared

The design step comes first, not last. Using Digital Smile Design, photographs and video of you talking and smiling are used to plan the width, length, shape and proportion of each tooth against your own face, and the proposed result is superimposed on your photograph so you can see it before treatment starts.

Where appropriate, the approved design is converted into a trial smile: a temporary mock-up placed over your unprepared teeth, so you can see and feel the new shape in your own mouth. This is the point at which changes are easy to make. Nothing is prepared until you have approved how the smile will look.

How Ceramic Veneers Are Made and Fitted

  1. Consultation. Teeth, gums and bite are examined, and photographs, scans or impressions, and X-rays where needed, are taken.
  2. Design and approval. The smile is designed digitally, reviewed with you, adjusted where functionally possible, and approved.
  3. Preparation. Under local anaesthetic, a thin layer of enamel is usually removed from the front of each tooth – typically a fraction of a millimetre – so the veneer sits flush at the gum line and does not look bulky.
  4. Impression or intra-oral scan. A precise record of the prepared teeth, the opposing teeth and your bite goes to the laboratory with the shade and the approved design.
  5. Temporary veneers. Temporaries based on the design protect the prepared teeth and let you live with the new shape while the ceramic is made.
  6. Laboratory stage. The ceramist builds and characterises each veneer, layering shade and translucency so it reads as natural rather than uniformly white.
  7. Try-in and bonding. The veneers are tried in and checked for fit, shade, shape and the line of the smile. Once you are happy, the teeth are cleaned and etched, the veneers are adhesively bonded, and the bite and margins are checked and polished.
  8. Review. You are seen again shortly afterwards so the fit, the bite and the gums around the veneers can be reviewed.

An Honest Note: Preparation Is Irreversible

This is something patients deserve to hear plainly. Where enamel is prepared for a veneer, that enamel does not grow back. The tooth will need a veneer or a crown on it from then on, and the veneers themselves will need replacing at some point, as any restoration eventually does.

That is not a reason to avoid veneers – it is a reason to plan them carefully, remove as little tooth as the design genuinely requires, and consider the alternatives first. Whitening, composite bonding, gum contouring or orthodontic alignment may achieve what you want with less preparation, or none. Some cases can be treated with very minimal or no-preparation veneers. Your dentist will assess your teeth and tell you which of these is realistic for you before you commit.

Caring for Ceramic Veneers

Ceramic does not decay, but the tooth underneath it can, and the gum at the margin can still become inflamed. Brush twice a day, clean between your teeth daily, and keep the margin where the veneer meets the tooth scrupulously clean. Ceramic resists staining well, although the natural tooth and the cement at the edges can still discolour over time with heavy tea, coffee, red wine or tobacco.

Do not use your front teeth as tools: no opening packets, biting thread, or chewing ice and pen caps. Wear a night guard if you grind. With good hygiene, a protected bite and six-monthly reviews, ceramic veneers typically give many years of service.

Frequently asked questions

Well-made ceramic is translucent, so it reflects light in much the same way as natural enamel instead of looking flat and opaque. Shade, shape and proportion are planned against your own face, and the ceramist layers the shade rather than using a single block colour, so a veneer typically reads as a tooth rather than as a covering.
Usually a thin layer of enamel from the front of the tooth, often a fraction of a millimetre, guided by the approved design. Some cases can be treated with very minimal or no-preparation veneers. Your dentist will assess your enamel and tell you what your teeth actually need.
Where enamel has been prepared, no. That enamel does not grow back, and the tooth will need a veneer or a crown from then on. This is why the alternatives, including whitening, bonding and orthodontic alignment, are discussed before any preparation is done.
With good oral hygiene, a protected bite and regular reviews, veneers typically give many years of service. Their life is shortened by grinding, by using the front teeth to bite hard objects, and by gum disease or decay in the tooth underneath. No restoration is permanent, and veneers are eventually replaced.
If you plan to whiten, it is normally done before the veneers are made, because ceramic does not change colour with whitening treatments. The final veneer shade is then chosen to sit alongside your other teeth at their new shade. Your dentist will plan the sequence with you.
